Esoteric Songs by Kyle Okaly

Kyle Okaly is a film composer in Los Angeles.  He has decided to get into the nerdy music scene recently and so has written and produce his first album Esoteric Songs with  a folk rock style about video games and other geek culture topics.  Song topics include Star Craft, Portal, Pokémon, Star Wars, Chrono Trigger, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more.

Esoteric Songs cover art

Most of the songs on the album are love songs of some sort of another.  Several from the perspective someone from the various games that inspired him and one, My Child, that is from father to child, that child being a webpage.  It also has a cover of Jonathan Coulton song, Gurl.  They all have a melodious quality, the kind that is great for dancing too or just raising your spirits with.  Overall a good a set of good songs to listen too, maybe even use some for a romantic evening.

There are two animated song teasers (basically music videos that are not the full song) as well.  One for Box 12 (Pokémon love song), animated by Dan Sexton (Crunchlins) and the other Naboolie Portmanteau (a commentary on the intelligence characters in Phantom Menace)  animated by Stephen Leotti.  More are to released in the future, so keep an eye out for those.

The album is available on bandcamp at Name Your Price.  This could be $0, but how about giving the guy a few bucks for his work.

Two Geek Musicians From Two Sides of the Planet Planning to Take Over the World in Song

Meri Amber (Geek Pop artist from Australia) and Kraken Not Stirred (Nerd Rock artist from Canada) play the role of two brains in tanks scheming to take over the world with love or fear respectively, in song. The song features not only the performances of the two geek musicians but also Kraken Not Stirred’s music production and guitar solo. The music video features not only their performances but also comic-style art and video editing by Meri Amber.
You can watch the newly released video here.

Another ear worm from Meri Amber, who provides her usual upbeat style of singing.  This is my first hearing Kraken Not Stirred but I have to say on this he bring both good rapping and guitar riffs.  The music video is all right, would have been more interesting if they had live action brains in the jar instead of just animated ones.
Meri Amber

Her next upcoming concert is at Sugar City Con in Mackay (Queensland, Australia).

20 Sided Vice by Megathruster

Megathruster, the new acoustic nerd rock duo from Chris Waffle of Hot Waffles, released their first album a month ago 20 Sided Vice.

It is a 12 track album with half the tracks about your standard nerd topics such as Oregon Trail, playing fighting games and table-top mountains , and one favorite It’s Rough to be a Hufflepuff about being in Hogwarts lesser house.  All of which I like.  The other half are rather sexual in nature with names like Making Love Like A Geek, Settlers of My Pants, and Fuck Mountain.  Not really my cup of tea in that they too blatant, not really something to blare out in public.  But I will say I Want To Be Your Bruce Campbell is a great love song.   However overall I do recommend this for fans of funny songs that have a rock edge.

They have released two music videos from the album.  The first one is It’s Not Out Yet which is a tongue in check song about fans and Hollywood making movies, and stars real-life superhero Guardian Shield.  The other one is  Other People Playing Minecraft, which is about people watching other people playing video games.

You can get digital copies on iTunes and Bandcamp.   For physical CDs, get them from their website.

After the success of Hot Waffles, and a 1000 mile move in the name of love, Chris Waffle thought he would never write songs again. Then, in the waning summer of 2014, a wise wizard knocked on his door and cast a spell calling him back to music. The skies darkened, the clouds rumbled, there was an 80’s era cartoon transformation sequence, and when he awakened from the fog, Megathruster was born.

They’re coming straight from the Pacific Northwest, and singing from the spring 2016 album release “20 Sided Vice.”

You may have seen him at Flappers, the Improv, on Attack of the Show, America’s Worst Driver, and The People vs. George Lucas. You may have heard him at GenCon, on Dr.Demento’s radio show, KROQ, Kevin Smith’s Smodcastle, or in your dreams. But you’ve never seen and heard him like this.

Some Nerdy Music Videos

I have some recent music videos from nerdy artists to share with everyone.  Check the out and enjoy.

She’s Blue (‘I’m Blue’ by Eiffel 65 Parody) Music Video by Meri Amber  from her album “Pop goes The TARDIS.”  While clothed in self-made TARDIS dresses she sings about the emotions of the TARDIS.  Fun scenes include looking lovely at pictures of different Doctors and dancing with random people on the street holding TARDIS protest signs.

She also has a video for her song I XOX U, a love song written in emojis and txt talk.

The Hammer Birds, a French/Chinese band of a classical trained pianist and a multi-instrumental electro DJ, have a video out of them doing a cover of the Daft Punk song Aerodynamic using piano, bass, launchpad, and other random objects to create music.  Video is just clips of them playing.  Aerodynamic is one of my favorite Daft Punk songs and this holds up against the original in my opinion.

The also have a cover of Skrillex’s song Bangarang done acoustically.  Shot in the same style as their other video.

ILL SEER is a rapper/pastor with a PhD and his first full-length video is Fabricated Spaceman.  A deep song with a good flow shot in a laundry mat interspersed with clips from animation and old films.  Produced by Axwax of Delegates of Culture, directed and edited by Danny Alexander.  Not sure what it is about, but fun to listen to.

And then there is Mega Ran’s latest video, Laughin At Ya a track off of his album RNDM.  It is an autobiographical song about his music, video games, and life, while looking like the Joker.  Directed by Jaron Ikner.  If you need a song about doing what you love, this is a good one for you.

Press Release: Quantum Electro Flavor Dynamics

SIR KN8 makes poetically adventurous hip-hop. His music exhibits deft and deep lyricism, thematizing subjects uncommon to rap lexicon, which draw on his intellectual commitments in philosophy, history and science, and his Clark-Kent-alter-ego as an adjunct lecturer at schools in NYC. He very literally manifests KRS-One’s declaration “I am teacher, and others are kings,” and approaches this neglected dimension of emceeing with both sincerity and humor. In his recent stint in NYC he’s shared stages with the likes of Hemlock Ernst (Samuel Herring of Future Islands) and Michael Busse (formerly of Chronic Future.)

Last year his video “Makin’ Bread”, a recipe rap for a rustic Italian loaf, was an official selection at the Silver Sound Music Video Film Festival and Band Battle, and received the distinction “Most Instructional.”

Pretext Social Club describes Sir Kn8’s style as “delving into the fundamental essence of life-like a poetic form of Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History Of Time…For all who choose to actively listen and discern his casually spun, bopping words, the lyrics toss you down a paradoxical rabbit hole…”

American Pancake says “Sir Kn8 is a gentleman of the Universe’s court…he is a prolific speaker inciting the youth to learn things they usually would not give a fuck about if it were not for his blessed delivery and inspiring ability to wrap words together like a balloon animal.”

Dingus calls Sir Kn8’s music as “catchy, mind expanding tunes…You can’t stop smiling from all their good energy.”

1.21 Gigiwatts describes it as a mixture of “tasty beats, fresh funk, wonky sounds, smells, cactus trees, pitch bends, pre-socratic philosophy, space aesthetically and cosmically…songs which are both surreal and relatable.”

His work includes a song about the principles of formal logic, via an enumeration of all the things one can say or think about an avocado.   It is from the full-length album Quantum Electro Flavor Dynamics, which is about the philosophical implications of quantum physics.
