About Sean Danconia
Sean Danconia has built a seductive visual universe by marrying cult-cinema & animation to a wild pop-art aesthetic. Born in Montreal, Canada, Danconia was named after another “Sean”-Connery—by his mother, an intrepid James Bond fan. This early “Bondian” bullet would fire itself throughout Danconia’s life and creative pursuits. After living and working in Italy, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Vancouver—this iconoclast Canadian designer/artist/animator is firing from all creative pistons. Danconia’s composite world is a “bio pic” of his own imagination: irreverent, prolific, explosive – based on an encyclopedic knowledge of popular culture past, and a knowing eye for future trend undercurrents years before they hit, Danconia’s Pop-Fusion Art, design, creative branding, collages, melanges all serve to integrate his punk-mod sensibility, which pops-out of a razor sharp eye, colored by an eastern tinted lens.

Ongaku Overdrive II, Music Festival For Gamers & Anime Fans, Announces Lineup & Day After Show

Ongaku Overdrive is a music festival in Winter Park, Florida (somewhere around Orlando it seems) for fans of anime, video games,  sci-fi, and the like.  Saturday May 10th will be their second event at The Haven Lounge.  Doors open up at 2pm and will go till 1am.  The event includes a mix of rock, chiptunes, J-pop, nerdcore, and electronic music that draws inspiration from video games, fantasy, comic books, and other realms of nerddom.

New acts this year include Armcannon who preform rock renditions of classic video game music; otaku rapper Cashamil Anime Boy; chiptunes/electronic artists Professor Shyguy; videogame/vocaloid synth-rock band Final Weapon; chiptunes and guitarists Danimal Cannon; and finally one of the blog’s favorite rappers Mega Ran.

Returning acts are J-Pop artist Rai Kamishiro; famed otaku rapper Richie Branson; nerd rock band Sci-Fried; video game remixer and DJ, Benjamin Briggs; the blog’s other favorite rapper Adam Warrock; and 16-bit wizards MagiTek.

Tickets for the event are $15 online and $20 at the door.  Attendees must be 18 and bring ID.

An after-party called “The Day After Show” will be held on Sunday May 11th at The Geek Easy starting at 4pm and goes till 1am.  It will feature performances by DJ Roborob, Benjamin Briggs, DJ Cylon, Doug Funnie, Shammers and Shinobi the MC, MC Wreckshin, Eye Q, and more.  A donation of $5 for the artists performing is asked of those attending.  There will also be a grab bag raffle.

This event has one of the best line-ups I have seen in a while and with a cheap price.  I would like to see this expand to at least two days though to give the performers more time.  Someone go and send me a review of it, ok.

Nerdapalooza 2013

I am sorry I let this one almost slip by me.  Nerdapalooza, the biggest nerd music event, is back with another great line up this year.  At the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL from Friday October 18th through Sunday the 20th.

Headliners for this year are They Might Be Giants.  The alternative rock band known for the crazy lyrics and wild style.  Their appearance on Tiny Toons lead a whole new generation, including myself, to discover them.  They have written music for the Daily Show, Dexter’s Lab, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Oblongs, and more.  They were the first major labor recording artist to release an album entirely in MP3 format.

Friday night gets things started with performances by nerdcore  superstars Mega Ran, Jesse Danerously, Shinobi Ninja, and Adam Warrock; Gemeni, house band of OverClocked Remix the OverClocked University, chip rockers Urizen, and the electronic/chip music of Benjamin Briggs, Professor Shyguy,  and DJ Cutman.

Saturday starts in the morning with rappers 9K1 and goes from there.  Other acts through out the day are chip rockers The Runaway Five, nerdcore artists Beefy, Schaffer the DarklordB-Type, My Parents’ Favorite Music, and MC Frontalot; comedy acts brentalfloss and with the OneUps and Marc with a C; video game rock of Random Encounter, Careless Juja, the Protomen, Lords of Thunder and Moon Hooch; chip music with Nullsleep,.  The night ends with They Might be Giants followed by Epic Win Burlesque.

Sunday still has plenty of great acts.  It starts off though with an open mic session.  Acts playing that day are nerdcore rappers Death*Star, Sammus, and MC Lars; nerd/geek rockers Sci-Fred, the Gekkos, The OneUps, Nerf Herder (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s theme music), the Returners, and Urizen again; electronic with DJ RoboRob; comedy rock acts of Peelander-Z and Green Jelly; whatever  Solillaquists of Sound is, and heavy metal with  Powerglove and Dethlehem.

The festival will also have nerd themed artists, several indie game designers, plus vendors and exhibitors.  Friday is free, Saturday passes are $50, and Sunday’s $40.  A full weekend pass is $70.

Once again I so want to go, but can not.  So much different music to check out, everyone can find something to love.

Plus do not forget about The Day After party on Monday the 22nd.  With over twenty performers like YTCracker, Mega Ran and K-Murdock, and Richie Branson.

Death Of Disko Warp

A message from Disko Warp, a electronic music and lifestyle label from Seattle WA,  founder and owner Pete Ellison aka Initial P;

After 8 years of running independent dance label Disko Warp, I’ve decided to place it on indefinite hiatus to pursue other activities and new artistic directions. I feel like the Disko Warp team has accomplished a lot of great things, but unfortunately all things must change and it’s time to move on to other projects and areas of work. You will probably still see me produce new songs from time to time, and I’ll still be participating in The Paradise Last’s Eurobeat Forever project, and maybe some more toho or anime remix projects. We’ll have to see what comes up. I’ll still be DJ-ing, so I hope you’ll come see me play at a rave or convention some time.

For myself, the decision to retire the label comes with a shift in focus to my personal artistic expression and visual art. I’ve started a new site to showcase and offer my work for sale, so I hope you’ll check it out.

You can continue to follow me and my creative activities: TumblrDeviantart, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram: petehasabeard.

I want to thank everyone who has supported the Disko Warp label since its inception in 2005, purchased our releases, come to our events and cheered us on. Maybe Disko Warp will return again some day when the time is right and the stars align. It’s been and always will be a pretty significant part of my life. As a way of saying thanks to Disko Warp’s fans, I’ve decided to publish the majority of our back catalog for download at no charge. You can check that out right now. Please feel free to spread that link any way that you see fit.

You can still support our efforts by purchasing Disko Warp CD’s, DVD’s and merch, including a special CD+DVD+Swag bundle for $25 while supplies last.

Live @ BRKfest

Last year was the first the chiptune festival in Lexington, KY called BRKfast on July 13-14.  Dozens of artist and their fans gathered for two days of music, fund, and partying.  You can now relive that weekend or learn about for the first time with the live@brfest album.
live@BRKfest2012 cover art

The album is 27 tracks long.  Twenty two of the tracks are live recordings of different artist performing and the others are various quotes and sound bytes made over the weekend.  A chance to understand some of the inside jokes from the event.  The download also comes with 39 pictures from the event.

The album is “pay what you want” meaning you get to choose how much you pay for it including nothing.  If you do give money for it all donations go to helping to pay for BRKfest later this year in July.  Plus for any amount of money give you are able to receive seven Little Speed DJ files from some of the different chiptune artists at the event for free.

The album itself is a mix of different types of chiptune music. From music that sounds like it was straight from an old school video to an electronic/techno sound to Tracks vary in length from under two minutes to over seven minutes.  Quick note, the album does have some profanity on it, so not really for the kiddies.

Special favorite songs of mine include: LomPARD! by Str8bit, it kind of has this dance mix feel but pure old school NES game feel to it that I like; Don Draper by  sp00ked, very mechanical and bleep bloop sounds that is exciting and musical as well ; and Oracle by Smiletron, has this dream like quality that lets you float on the notes yet still feels very 8bit.

The rest of the artists on the album are: HunterQuinn, Shitbird, KKrusty, sp00ked, SSD Engage, S.P.R.Y., CCDM (because of them I have decided to dedicate my life to learning who has the football), Awesome Force, Freque, datacats, pandaSTAR, Nestrogen, Solarbear, Str8bit, CompyCore, Saskrotch, Bitman, Dream Fox, AndaruGO, Roboctopus, Nonfinite, and Smiletron.

The whole album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Narayan Choudury (S.P.R.Y)  in Smoking Mirrors Studios in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This year’s event is slated for July.  They are working on bringing over chiptune artists from all over the region and beyond.  If you want to perform; submit a demo to Solarbear (Curits Ware) at solarbear@brkfest.org
