New Inverse Phase Shows and News

There are a few chances to catch chip music creator extraordinaire Inverse Phase coming up this August.  You can hear his music and learn about chip music creation.

In Washington DC at the Rhizome Space in Takoma on Sunday August 7th at noon a gathering of Muff Wiggler forum users will feature various synthesizer demonstrations, most of them analog.  Inverse Phase will have his custom chiptune synth that he is building (read further down) on display.

Then on the weekend of Friday August 26th through the 28th on Sunday he will be at Omegacon in Charlottesville, Virginia at the Holiday Inn.  He will be doing a performance and a discussion panel over the weekend, plus exhibiting in the vendor hall.

He will also be at this year’s BRKFest in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 2-4.  I will post more about this one later.

Inverse has also been building his own chiptune synthesizer from scratch, having previously been using emulators to create his music.  He has been building it quietly for a while now just hinting to fans about it.  It currently only produces basic music but Inverse will continue to work on it.  He promises “amazing things are going to happen” with it.  You can read more about the creation on his Patreon account.

Fans of chip music should try to catch one of these shows if you can.  If you are not familiar with chip music, its culture, creation, and genres then check out one of these shows and let Inverse Phase tell you about it.  He is one of the best at explaining it to novices.

Follow Inverse Phase on social media or sign up for his newsletter to keep up with future shows what other adventures he is on.

Ongaku Overdrive II, Music Festival For Gamers & Anime Fans, Announces Lineup & Day After Show

Ongaku Overdrive is a music festival in Winter Park, Florida (somewhere around Orlando it seems) for fans of anime, video games,  sci-fi, and the like.  Saturday May 10th will be their second event at The Haven Lounge.  Doors open up at 2pm and will go till 1am.  The event includes a mix of rock, chiptunes, J-pop, nerdcore, and electronic music that draws inspiration from video games, fantasy, comic books, and other realms of nerddom.

New acts this year include Armcannon who preform rock renditions of classic video game music; otaku rapper Cashamil Anime Boy; chiptunes/electronic artists Professor Shyguy; videogame/vocaloid synth-rock band Final Weapon; chiptunes and guitarists Danimal Cannon; and finally one of the blog’s favorite rappers Mega Ran.

Returning acts are J-Pop artist Rai Kamishiro; famed otaku rapper Richie Branson; nerd rock band Sci-Fried; video game remixer and DJ, Benjamin Briggs; the blog’s other favorite rapper Adam Warrock; and 16-bit wizards MagiTek.

Tickets for the event are $15 online and $20 at the door.  Attendees must be 18 and bring ID.

An after-party called “The Day After Show” will be held on Sunday May 11th at The Geek Easy starting at 4pm and goes till 1am.  It will feature performances by DJ Roborob, Benjamin Briggs, DJ Cylon, Doug Funnie, Shammers and Shinobi the MC, MC Wreckshin, Eye Q, and more.  A donation of $5 for the artists performing is asked of those attending.  There will also be a grab bag raffle.

This event has one of the best line-ups I have seen in a while and with a cheap price.  I would like to see this expand to at least two days though to give the performers more time.  Someone go and send me a review of it, ok.

Top 10 Mega Man Music List to Rush Jet To

Another video game list.  This time the blue bomber, Mega Man also known as Rockman in Japan.  He is not as well known in mainstream as some other video game characters, but that is what I feel makes he more nerdy.  Besides many many game squeals and spin-offs, he has had comics, cartoons, animes, novels, and plenty of merchandize.  Plus there are several musicians who have been inspired by the game and the soundtracks of the games.  So here is my music list of Mega Man music.

1. Mega Ran the nerdcore phenom, who’s name and three albums were inspired by the game.

2. Armcannon video game band named after Mega Man’s main weapon.

3. Protomen with their Mega Man rock opera, so far two parts have been released.

4. Snake Man Vs. The World by Benjamin Briggs is chiptune remixes of Snake Man’s theme for DarkeSword’s Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet.

5. The Megas with pop-rock lyrical Mega Man covers.

6. More nerdcore,  Light Prototype from Dual Core is Mega Man based.

7. X-Hunters is metal band that plans songs from the Mega Man X series.

8. From What if This CD… Had Lyrics? by brentalfloss, we have Bubble Man, Mega Man 3, and Gotta Run/Be The One with the Megas.

9. Year 200X more video game music from a Mega Man inspired band.

10. Off the FuMP sideshow is Giftedgear with a little acoustic parody of Glycerine by Bush about struggling while playing Mega Man.

Honorable Mention goes to, what else, the theme from the Mega Man cartoon.

Mega Ran has gotten back from a two week tour in Japan with some of the top Chiptune DJs around.  Part of this tour was to film for a documentor in Blu-ray.  So to help cover costs for the tour (which has already happened), studio costs, and disc manufacturing for CD, Blu-ray, and vinyl release.  So has looked to Kickstarter to help fund the project once again.

The Kickstarter is already funded, but you can still give for rewards.  This will be the third successfully funded Kickstarter project for Random.

Stretch goals up now are at $11,000 a full music/video collaboration between Mega Ran and Castlevania SOTN composer Nichiru Yamane.  At $12,000 a Hiversaires Rap Remix with Aliceffekt featurette and new secret EP release.

Backing the project can get you a Mega Ran album with remixed songs by chiptune artists, Blu-ray of concerts and interview footage, custom cover songs and freestyle shout outs, music albums exclusive to Japan, vinyl release, and more.   All backers who give $20 or more will also receive Ran’s Castlevania album instantly with instrumentals or any other album you are missing.  All backers will also receive exclusive music with Mega Ran and Mister Wilson called Blue Bomber, Mega Ran and Sega.

He also has a tour coming up with Danimal Cannon, chiptune legend.  They will be on the west coast doing shows together.  They will be joining up with some other great acts along the way as well.  Danimal has a new album out

Top 10 Star Wars Songs to Use the Force To

Star Wars one of the (if not single ) biggest fanboy inducing nerdy out over franchises ever.  It invokes strong feelings in its fans and some put those feelings into song.  So with May having both May 4th and 25th considered Star Wars Day for different reasons, I honor the month with this list of Star Wars songs.

1. Grease Wars: great Luke Ski took the music from the movie/play Grease and reworked it to be a melody about the first Star Wars movie with the help of Carrie Dahlby.  This was the first thing I ever heard from him or any member of the FuMP and can be credited for helping lead me on the track to creating and running this blog.

2. We all know Han Solo is the coolest guy in the Star Wars universe and Mikey Mason shares with us his desire to be cool like him in Han Solo Cool.

3.  H2Awesone gives us a look into the mind of Luke and his feelings for Uncle Owen and living on the farm.  A rock number that puts Luke in the role of young rebel wanting to break free.

4. Adam Warrock has Star Wars Uncut that expresses fans love for the original movies and about a group of fans making their own fan film to go with it.

5. We get a number of songs from Sci-Fried about Star Wars: Join the Empire, Wanna Be Your Jedi, Star Wars Idiot, and several more to check out.

6. One of the first songs I ever heard from Dual Core was A New Hope (first song on their first album).  It shows off the fun word play of INT80 and the beats of C64.

7. Baby It’s Cold Outside (Hoth Version) with both Kirby Krackle and the Doubleclicks takes a classic and gives it a little Star Wars twist.

8. Tom Smith sings about all Waking Up Jedi or Sith, depends on how you see it.

9. Even the bad guys get some songs about them too.  Marc Gunn strums out a Lusty Young Sith.  Not really about Siths or something children should listen to really.  wink

10. Now I am not that big of a mc Chris fan, but Fett’s Vette is pretty toe tapping and just fun.  Loved it since I first heard it on Sealab.

Honorable Mention: The Star Wars theme done 8bit by Will Gannon.

A_Rival and Inverse Phase on Tour

Chip Hop rapper A_Rival’s new album TRUTHCANNON is being released on May 21 and he is going on tour with some friends.

The album is more love letter to videogame music than his previous chip-infused nerdcore work.  With nearly all of it being original work.  Check out a preview.

The mini tour starts this Saturday at 8 Static where he will be debuting tracks off the album.  He will be joined by Inverse Phase, Saint, Watabou, and Radionarcotix on visuals.  Inverse Phase will also be doing a workshop on chip music and its different sounds.  Show starts at 7pm.  Admission is $7-$10.  After party at the The Institute Bar with A_Rival DJing.

On Monday (5/13) at the Metro Gallery in Baltimore A_Rival, Inverse Phase, and Compycore, with visuals by Pixelseed, will be playing.  Tickets are $8, doors open at 7 PM.

Finally on Tuesday (5/14) the tour comes to Gallery 5 in Richmond.  A_Rival and Inverse Phase are joined this time by Cuttlefish and DataCats on visuals.  Doors open at 6 PM, show starts at 8 PM, tickets $8.  There will be gaming set-ups sponsored by Play N Trade Carytown and cupcakes.

Inverse will also be playing and doing panels at Animazement May 24-26 in Raleigh, NC.

A_Rival is also helping a Kickstarter project for the Ultimate Chiptune Weekend in Seattle.  A 3 day festival of various forms of chip music with several names already saying they will be there.  They need $6,200 but only have $1,475 so far with 7 days to go.  So if you can spare a few bucks and get your ticket to the event or at least an album to download from the event.  Acts signed include Trey Frey, SmiletronHenry Homesweet, Radlib aka OxygenStar, Electric Children and more.
