Esoteric Songs by Kyle Okaly

Kyle Okaly is a film composer in Los Angeles.  He has decided to get into the nerdy music scene recently and so has written and produce his first album Esoteric Songs with  a folk rock style about video games and other geek culture topics.  Song topics include Star Craft, Portal, Pokémon, Star Wars, Chrono Trigger, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more.

Esoteric Songs cover art

Most of the songs on the album are love songs of some sort of another.  Several from the perspective someone from the various games that inspired him and one, My Child, that is from father to child, that child being a webpage.  It also has a cover of Jonathan Coulton song, Gurl.  They all have a melodious quality, the kind that is great for dancing too or just raising your spirits with.  Overall a good a set of good songs to listen too, maybe even use some for a romantic evening.

There are two animated song teasers (basically music videos that are not the full song) as well.  One for Box 12 (Pokémon love song), animated by Dan Sexton (Crunchlins) and the other Naboolie Portmanteau (a commentary on the intelligence characters in Phantom Menace)  animated by Stephen Leotti.  More are to released in the future, so keep an eye out for those.

The album is available on bandcamp at Name Your Price.  This could be $0, but how about giving the guy a few bucks for his work.

HYPERSPACE’s Delusions of Grandeur

Delusions of Grandeur is an album from the nerd punk band HYPERSPACE. ”Delusions of Grandeur” is comprised of thirteen nerdy pop punk songs about Star Wars, girls, pop culture, breakups, and other nerdy stuff.  I got a request to review their album months ago and I am just now getting to it.  Sorry guys I am just slow like that.

The album has several nerdy such as wondering if the new Star Wars movie will be any god (Episode 7), tributes to both the Borg and Darth Vader, singing about Chewbacca in Vegas, and summarizing the Goonies movie.  They also have several songs singing about women who they love; Avril Lavigne, Barbara Gordon, Paula (Abdul), Carrie Fisher, and Rave Girl which is about a generic raver.  They have interesting taste in women a.k.a. same as me.   It also contains a cover of Nirvana’s “School” from their Bleach album and two strange little songs marked with parental advisory (Screeching Weasel and Untitled).

The album has a nice punk rock sound.  Kind of unrefined but still well put together.  Though all the songs do sound very much the same, so if you like one song you will must likely like them all.  I do recombine checking it out.

HYPERSPACE was formed in Atlanta, GA in 2011.  Their musical influences include Nerf Herder, Green Day, Nirvana, and Weezer. The album is available for purchase through iTunes, Amazon, CdBaby, GooglePlay, bandcamp and Spotify.

Two Geek Musicians From Two Sides of the Planet Planning to Take Over the World in Song

Meri Amber (Geek Pop artist from Australia) and Kraken Not Stirred (Nerd Rock artist from Canada) play the role of two brains in tanks scheming to take over the world with love or fear respectively, in song. The song features not only the performances of the two geek musicians but also Kraken Not Stirred’s music production and guitar solo. The music video features not only their performances but also comic-style art and video editing by Meri Amber.
You can watch the newly released video here.

Another ear worm from Meri Amber, who provides her usual upbeat style of singing.  This is my first hearing Kraken Not Stirred but I have to say on this he bring both good rapping and guitar riffs.  The music video is all right, would have been more interesting if they had live action brains in the jar instead of just animated ones.
Meri Amber
Meri Amber is a Geek Pop artist from Australia who tours around and performs at many conventions in both Australia and, recently, New Zealand. She has released a number of CDs including the Super EP (songs inspired by ninjas, superpowers, YouTube etc.), her Doctor Who themed album, Pop Goes The TARDIS (songs inspired by Doctor Who), and her 90s themed album, Retro Sherbet (songs inspired by Tamagotchis, Pokémon, Xena etc.). Her next upcoming concert is at Sugar City Con in Mackay (Queensland, Australia).

New Inverse Phase Shows and News

There are a few chances to catch chip music creator extraordinaire Inverse Phase coming up this August.  You can hear his music and learn about chip music creation.

In Washington DC at the Rhizome Space in Takoma on Sunday August 7th at noon a gathering of Muff Wiggler forum users will feature various synthesizer demonstrations, most of them analog.  Inverse Phase will have his custom chiptune synth that he is building (read further down) on display.

Then on the weekend of Friday August 26th through the 28th on Sunday he will be at Omegacon in Charlottesville, Virginia at the Holiday Inn.  He will be doing a performance and a discussion panel over the weekend, plus exhibiting in the vendor hall.

He will also be at this year’s BRKFest in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 2-4.  I will post more about this one later.

Inverse has also been building his own chiptune synthesizer from scratch, having previously been using emulators to create his music.  He has been building it quietly for a while now just hinting to fans about it.  It currently only produces basic music but Inverse will continue to work on it.  He promises “amazing things are going to happen” with it.  You can read more about the creation on his Patreon account.

Fans of chip music should try to catch one of these shows if you can.  If you are not familiar with chip music, its culture, creation, and genres then check out one of these shows and let Inverse Phase tell you about it.  He is one of the best at explaining it to novices.

Follow Inverse Phase on social media or sign up for his newsletter to keep up with future shows what other adventures he is on.
