brentalfloss on the Billboard Top 10

Comedic video game musician brentalfloss, he prefers it to be lowercase so indulge him, has made it onto Billboard’s Comedy chart at 8 with his album Bits of Me. He joins Jimmy Fallon, Tenacious D, Lonely Island, and other comedians and comedic bans on the top 10.

Brent “brentalfloss” Black is a musician, comedian, and gamer who is best known for adding lyrics to classic video game tunes in his Youtube-based “With Lyrics” series.  This is his second CD which you can get on iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp, and at Level Up Studios.  It includes more of his lyrics for classic video game music.  Songs are taken from such games as Mega Man 2 and 3, Banjo-Kazooie, Contra, Final Fantasy VI, Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, Star Fox, and many more.

For those who do not know, Billboard is the top source for what is going on in the music world with news and their music charts on various categories.

Logan Award Winners

The Logan Awards for this year were announced this past weekend.  The winners are as followed:
Outstanding Comedy Music Video went to The Muppet Show Theme Song by OK Go and the Muppets which I picked to win due its great visuals without being disturbing like Weird Al.
Outstanding Original Comedy Song went to  It’s Not Just For Gays Anymore by Neil Patrick Harris from the opening of last year’s Tony’s, which I also picked to win.
Finally Outstanding Parody Song went to Snoopy The Dogg by the great Luke Ski, which I also picked cause how do you beat the combination of gansta rap and Peanuts.

Man I should have made bets.  Only thing to do now is start thinking of nominees for next year.

More Nerdapalooza and the Day After

Got more on Nerdapalooza.

Announced as a headlining band, Math the Band, a duo from Providence, RI doing electro music with combination of old video game systems, analog synthesizers and other instruments.  A high energy show to catch.

Also is returning is local rock band Beebs and Her Money Makers.  They have a new album coming out and their own comic book.  Nerdcord rapper YTCracker, who Nerdapallooza refers to as “the undisputed nerd rap king.”  Now why I do like his work, I just do not see him as the king.  Go check him out and decide for yourself though.  Most interesting is a band by the name of No More Kings. They got some attention in 2007 with their song Sweep the Leg that was inspired by the Karate Kid movie and its video which featured a large number of the movie’s cast.

And if you are looking for something the day after Nerdapalooza, check out The Day After sponsored by Mammoth Sound.  It is a entire extra day of Nerdcore hip-hop.  The event will be at a bar called “The Haven” on Monday August 6th.  The Haven is a large venue with a full size stage for the show, a full suply of liquor, non-stop bear on tap, and a top of the line sound system.

The Headliners for the show are MC Lars, YTCracker, and Random aka. MegaRan.  So that will be awesome.

Joining them is mixed bag of other artists.  Soup or Villainz, King Pheenix, Former Fat Boys, Epic-1, ProjektZero,  Magitek, HD Ninja, Klopfenpop and NES-T, Emergency Pizza Party, Rappy McRapperson, JPHONIC, Shinobi MC, Shammers, StarF, Sample the Martian, and Bro-bot (Feat. 8bit Duane).  Personally other than the Former Fat Boys and Shammers, I do not know a lot or care about any of the others.  Would be a good chance to check them all out though.

The guys handling the after party dance, and doing some spinning some on turntables during the show, are DJ RoboRob, Ben Briggs (from OCRemix), and tanner4105 (aka. “T-Byte”).

Tickets are $15 pre-reg or $20 at the door.  You can also pick up tickets at Nerdapalooza.

Logan Awards Nominees

The Funny Music Project (FuMP) every year awards excellence in comedy music every year with their Logan Whitehurst Memorial Award for Excellence in Comedy Music or just Logan Awards for short.  They present awards in three categories: Outstanding Original Comedy Song, Outstanding Parody Song, and Outstanding Comedy Music Video

The awards are named after Logan Whitehurst.  A comedy musician whose songs were a frequent and popular part of the Dr. Demento show.  He passed away in 20006 from a cancerous brain tumor.

The awards are selected this way.  Anyone can nominate a song or videos from the past calender year; re-treatments of old songs are eligible but not re-releases.  The awards chairperson, new one selected each year, picks three people from comedy music fandom and three active comedy musicians for the jury.  Jurors can not participate in the open nomination process.  The jury select from the nominees their top fives from the song pool and give them to the chairperson who tallies the votes.  The five with most votes are announced as nominees and the one with the most votes wins.

Logan Award Statuette

The physical award itself was designed by Jamie Noguchi in honor of Logan Whitehurst’s song “Robot Cat” and can be seen above.  Funding for the whole thing comes from fans of comedy music.  So give if you can to this thing so it can keep going.  Comedy music does not get a lot of respect.

Now for this year’s nominees, with my own personal faves mark with an *.

Bands for the event include Paul and Storm, H2Awesome!, and Random Battles. Paul and Storm are a comedy duo whose music has appeared on the Bob and Tom radio show, Dr. Demento, Comedy Central, Drew Carey Show, The Guild, Homestar Runner, and more.   They have even performed with Jonathan Coulton, Wil Wheaton, Neil Gaiman, Felicia Day, and Weird Al.  They have been a duo since 2004 before then they were one half of an acapella band Da Vinci’s Notebook, who I got to see preform live many years ago.  Lots of laugh all around with these guy.

H2Awesome, from NYC, is a geek rock band  with a comedic side of their own.  Fronted by two brothers, the two have worked with the likes of Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and written for Conan O’Brien, AMC, Nickelodeon, the Food Network, and Comedy Central.  Random Battles is a video game rock band with original and rocking versions of songs from Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, Zelda, and other faves.

The event will feature live artist creating new work during the event.  Prizes and giveaways will be awarded through the evening.   A limited edition (300) collectors Hard Rock Cafe pin commemorating both the Denver and Rock Comic Con will be available.  The Cafe will be serving The Fantastic Pour the official beer of Breckenridge Brewery made specifically for the con.  All proceeds from the event go to Comic Book Classroom, an after school literacy program running in 8 Colorado area schools.

Doors open at 9pm.  Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
